Her talk flips the script on how we think about accessibility in design. Instead of adding accessibility as an afterthought to meet code requirements, we’ll dive into a more proactive approach using human-centered design principles.

We’ll start with a quick lecture to get you up to speed on inclusive design concepts, then move to a hands-on activity where you’ll put these ideas to the test with real-life scenarios. You’ll receive a workbook created just for this workshop. By the end, we hope you’ll feel inspired to rethink your assumptions about different abilities and how the built environment can better serve everyone.

We are pleased to introduce 2024 Erwin-Ramsey Fellow, Dasani Madipalli!

Dasani has an impressive background in the technology sector, including a tenure at Microsoft developing assistive technology for people with disabilities. Working directly with end users, she noticed that accessibility challenges were just as common in the built environment as they are in the digital landscape. This inspired Dasani to pivot to a career in Architecture. She is currently in the second year of her Masters program in Architecture at @aschool_uva.

The 2024 Fellowship will investigate the effectiveness of current accessibility code requirements in Charlottesville, identifying opportunities to better incorporate the experiences of residents with disabilities into accessible design. What impressed us about Dasani’s proposal is the intersection of inclusive and community-centered design. In addition to reviewing accessibility guidelines, she will work directly with residents to gain insight into their experiences, developing resources to help empower individuals to take a more active role in the design process.
