Catlin House

Our clients started 2018 with a new addition and renovation to their 1830s estate. Their vision was rooted in family, friendship, and community gathering.

The new space centers around an expansive kitchen that connects a living area, casual dining room, wet bar, and a new screened porch with a gas fireplace. We also discovered some bonus space to include a cozy new home office. Throughout the design, flooring, cabinetry, and ceiling beams all use barn wood reclaimed from the property.

The open farmhouse kitchen is anchored by a large island topped with the same soapstone slab comprising the backsplash of the gas range. Exposed ridge beams, along with recessed LED lighting, draw the eye up to the cathedral ceilings.

The adjacent dining area features full length doors and windows overlooking the property’s spectacular view. This area opens to an enclosed screened-in porch complete with tiled floor, exposed cedar beams, and a brand new unvented gas fireplace constructed from existing brick that was whitewashed and topped with a cedar mantle.

A seating area off the kitchen features a mantle-top mirror that converts to a television. A home wet bar containing a wine cooler, ice machine, and open shelving keeps refreshment just within reach. The brick wall adjacent to the wet bar is original to the 1890 construction and was exposed during the renovation.

A sliding barn door separates the seating area from and the home’s entry hall. Here, we incorporated a small home office, repurposing windows and original casework removed from the kitchen during the renovation.
