2023 Erwin-Ramsey Fellowship Now Open for Applications
The application period for the 2023 Fellowship has closed.
Background
brwarchitects hosts the Erwin Ramsey Summer Fellowship program for graduate and fourth year undergraduate students in the School of Architecture. The Fellowship is a partnership between the resources at brwarchitects, the energy and creativity of the selected Fellow, and the needs and circumstances in our community. One Fellowship is awarded per year.
Housing affordability and equity are two of the most important determinants in how we design and participate in our communities. The 2023 Fellowship is ideal for students in the University of Virginia School of Architecture who are interested in contributing to the relationship between these determinants and how we can practice architecture in ways that fundamentally contribute to marginalized portions of our community.
This intensive three-to-four-week program will focus on a specific integrative project that contributes to Charlottesville’s affordable housing/equity goals and will be developed by the ingenuity and interests of the Fellow. During the program, the fellow will build relationships with residents, clients, and decision-makers in the Charlottesville community.
Past projects have included:
- Design strategies for the built environment to engage underserved youth and teen populations in Charlottesville.
- A walking tour and ‘catalog’ of guerrilla interventions in public spaces to create community ownership in shared public spaces.
- An exploration of the ways in which community agriculture can support the wellbeing and food security of resident-led redevelopment project at South First Street
- An affordable housing development curriculum for faith-based congregations whose missions and interests align with supportive and affordable housing.
Candidates will submit:
- Cover letter, including a brief personal statement about the proposed project or focus area
- Resume
- Work samples or portfolio
We encourage specific project proposals from candidates whose focus aligns with the Fellowship program.
