Arch’s Frozen Yogurt
While the building now serves another commercial use, the Arch’s Frozen Yogurt designed by BRW combines a sleek, contemporary design with sustainable features, creating a vibrant, street-connected space that enhances Charlottesville’s urban landscape.
Arch’s Frozen Yogurt, located on a busy urban corridor in Charlottesville, VA, took full advantage of the (then) new zoning ordinances by positioning the building close to the street. This forward placement engages pedestrians, while exterior patios and decks create an inviting atmosphere along the sidewalk. The contemporary design contrasts with surrounding buildings, helping to define the area’s evolving urban fabric. For this reason, brwarchitects received the 2008 Outstanding Plan for Development Award from the City of Charlottesville.
The two-story structure features expansive glass facades that showcase the activity inside, fostering a connection with the street. Patios and decks extend the energy of the interior into outdoor spaces, contributing to the vibrant, urban feel the owners desired.
Sustainability is woven into the design, with green spaces replacing the original paved site and native trees and shrubs integrated into the landscape. Ivy climbs the building’s cables, softening the exterior and creating a natural screen for the street-level patio. Solar heat gain is minimized by roof overhangs and second-floor sunshades, designed to reduce summer cooling loads while allowing winter warmth. The building is insulated for energy efficiency, and low-VOC paints, along with durable concrete and hardwood floors, promote healthy indoor air quality and low maintenance.
