A Professor’s Private Library
A detailed residential addition brings scholarly reverence to a modern space.
Inspired by the client’s cherished memories of studying in Yale’s cathedral-like library, this project sought to recreate the sacredness of the reading experience within a modern 3,000-square-foot addition to a 1933 traditional home.
To maintain the original home’s relationship to the street, the addition was discreetly positioned behind the house. It includes a listening room, home theater, office, and library.
In the library, a soaring cathedral ceiling and skylights flood the space with natural light, while two-story windows offer sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains in winter. A tall stone fireplace, embedded with fossils, serves as a striking focal point at the library’s entrance, blending natural history with architectural grandeur.
