The client’s fond memories of his time in the cathedral-like Yale library informed the goal of replicating the sacredness of the reading experience in a modern, 3,000-sf addition to his 1933 traditional home. In order to preserve the original home’s relationship to the street, the addition is organized behind the house and contains a listening room, home theater, office and library. In the library, a cathedral ceiling and skylights provide natural light while two-story windows provide views of the Blue Ridge Mountains in winter. A tall stone fireplace, embedded with fossils, forms a panel at the library’s entrance.
